This guide explains how PDR works, what affects the price, and when it might not be suitable.
What Is Paintless Dent Repair?
Paintless dent repair is a technique used to remove dents and dings from a vehicle’s bodywork without touching the paint. A trained technician uses specialist tools to carefully push or pull the metal back into its original shape from behind the panel.
Because no paint is removed or reapplied, the repair is often quicker and cheaper than traditional bodywork methods. It also means there is no risk of a colour mismatch, which can sometimes happen with resprays.
PDR works best on small to medium dents where the paint has not cracked or chipped. Common causes include:
- Car park door dings
- Hail damage
- Minor bumps
- Shopping trolley impacts
How Does the PDR Process Work?
When you bring your car in for a PDR assessment, a technician will first inspect the dent closely to decide whether the technique is suitable. They will look at the size and depth of the dent, where it sits on the panel, and whether the paint is still in good condition.
If PDR is appropriate, the technician will access the back of the panel. This is usually done by removing a trim piece or by working through an existing gap in the bodywork. They then use long, thin metal rods and specialised picks to apply gentle, controlled pressure to the underside of the dent. The metal is slowly massaged back into shape without disturbing the paint on the surface.
For dents that can only be accessed from the front, technicians may use a glue-pulling method. A small tab is fixed to the dent using a special glue, and a pulling tool is used to draw the metal outward. Once the dent is removed, the tab and glue are cleanly taken off without leaving any mark.
The whole process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on how many dents there are and how complex the repair is. Our dent removal specialists carry out a thorough check before starting any work, so you will always know what to expect.
How Much Does Paintless Dent Repair Cost in the UK?
PDR is generally much more affordable than traditional dent repair, which can involve sanding, filling, priming, and respraying an entire panel.
The price you pay will depend on several things:
- The size of the dent
- The depth of the dent
- Where the dent is on the vehicle
- How many dents need repairing
- The make and model of the car
Here is a rough guide to typical PDR costs in the UK:
| Dent Size | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|
| Very small (less than 1cm) | £50 to £80 |
| Small (1cm to 3cm) | £80 to £150 |
| Medium (3cm to 6cm) | £150 to £250 |
| Large (over 6cm) | £250 to £400+ |
| Multiple dents (e.g. hail damage) | Priced on inspection |
These are rough estimates only. The best way to get an accurate price is to book a free inspection, where a technician can assess the damage in person.
When Is PDR Not Suitable?
PDR is a highly effective method, but it does have limits. It will not work in every situation. A traditional repair method may be needed if:
The paint is cracked or chipped. PDR relies on the paintwork remaining intact. If the paint has split, flaked, or chipped around the dent, the panel will need to be refinished after the metalwork is corrected.
The dent is on a crease or sharp fold. Deep crease dents, where the metal has folded sharply rather than simply dipped, are much harder to treat with PDR. The metal fibres can become stretched or stressed, making it difficult to restore the original shape cleanly.
The dent is too large or too deep. Very large dents or those with significant depth may require traditional repair methods, including filler and a full panel respray.
The panel is made of aluminium. Aluminium behaves differently to steel when worked, and not all PDR technicians are trained to work with it. It requires extra care and a slightly different approach.
The location is hard to reach. Some areas of a car, such as reinforced pillars or very tight panel edges, may not give a technician enough room to access the back of the dent.

Is Paintless Dent Repair Worth It?
For most small to medium dents where the paint is still intact, PDR is absolutely worth it. Here is why:
It costs less. Because there is no need for filler, primer, or paint, the overall cost is significantly lower than a conventional panel repair.
It is faster. Many PDR jobs can be completed within a few hours, compared to several days for a full panel repair that involves painting and drying time.
It keeps your car’s original paintwork. A car that retains its original factory paint can have a higher resale value than one that has had panels resprayed.
It is environmentally friendlier. No solvents, chemicals, or paint products are used, which reduces the environmental impact of the repair.
There is no colour mismatch risk. Matching paint to an older car can be tricky. PDR removes this concern entirely.
It is important to know your consumer rights when having any car repair carried out. The Citizens Advice guide on problems with a car repair explains what you are entitled to if work is not completed to a proper standard.
Will PDR Affect My Insurance or Warranty?
In most cases, minor cosmetic repairs like PDR will not affect your vehicle’s manufacturer warranty. However, it is always worth checking with your warranty provider if you are unsure.
If the dent was caused by someone else and you are making a non-fault insurance claim, PDR may be covered. Speak to your insurer before booking any repair to confirm what is included under your policy.
